Elaine Quinn, The Solopreneur Specialist, is a consultant, coach, author, and speaker in Chicago who works with solopreneurs—small business owners who create and grow a business they run by themselves.

Solopreneurs and others who work from home have unique challenges. Because when you work where you live, you need to manage business and personal matters separately, but simultaneously!

Elaine’s work focuses on helping clients become more effective—doing the right things, and more efficient—doing them in a way that doesn’t waste time.

She has authored two popular books, Escape the To-Do List Trap, which lays out an easy way to finally tame your to-do lists and There’s No Place Like Working from Home, which addresses the challenges of working from home.

For more, visit Elaine’s LinkedIn profile and website. She can be reached at Elaine@SolopreneurSpecialist.com

Jim’s Hack:
Book: SPIN Selling. It's based on analysis of a lot of sales calls. It's an older book by Neil Rackham.

Tyson’s Tip:
Get rid of all those junk apps that are on your phone. It just clutters up your life. Any time you can remove some clutter from your life, it’s beneficial.

In addition, go through your subscriptions, if you have an iPhone, and get rid of those subscriptions on your phone or apps that you don't use.

Elaine’s Tip:
Build some time into your calendar. You can't schedule every minute of every day. You’ve got to leave time for things that you don't expect. That gives you some flexibility when you need to have it.

This week on the show we have Matt Aulsbrook. Matt started his first insurance agency in 2009 when an entrepreneurship class in his MBA program sparked his interest in business ownership.   This taught him how to be lean with a startup as he bought a duplex and rented the other side to keep a low overhead.  He still ran out of money, as many small businesses do, but his dad bailed him out with additional funding saving the agency from closing.  Matt was able to pay his dad back and worked up to owning five agencies.  The insurance businesses funded law school.  He became an absentee owner in the agencies in 2014 and started law school.

He graduated law school in 2017 and got his bar card in 2018.  He has since sold all except for one small agency.  The money from the sale of the businesses has allowed him to pay off all debt excluding real estate.  Now his primary focus is growing his personal injury firm in Arlington, TX.

6:23 Addiction and recovery
16:33 The power of gratitude
22:06 Long-term goal shifts from COVID-19

Jim’s Hack:
Setup a good morning routine. It gets your mind in the right place to start the day.

Tyson’s Tip:
Reevaluate what you do every day that wastes your time. For Tyson, it was upgrading an old scanner.

Matt’s Tip:
Take a listen to Bill Umansky’s new podcast “The Lawman’s Lounge”.

This week on the show we have Michael Urbina, founder of The Urbina Law Firm, LLC in Marietta, GA.

During his early law school career, Michael worked for several in-house legal departments with international corporations such as The Coca-Cola Company, Invesco Limited, Crawford & Company, and Kemira Chemicals as he had the intention to become an in-house corporate lawyer.

However, after an opportunity to work with the Office of the Principal Legal Advisor (OPLA) for the Department of Homeland Security, he developed a strong interest in immigration and saw the need for representation in the immigrant community.

Michael is adamant that he does things differently in the services his firm offers to the community.

In today’s episode we’ll discuss the current hold on immigration, making decisions based on fear, and self-improvement.

Jim’s Hack:
Jim is currently reading “The Road Less Stupid” by Keith Cunningham, there are a lot of great questions to ask yourself in this book.

Tyson’s Tip:
YouTube has a free audio library, you could use it in your podcasts or videos.

Michael’s Pointer:
Chris Voss, the FBI negotiator, has a course called MasterClass that Michael found very useful for every aspect of life. Get stronger communication skills, game-changing insights into human nature, and more of what you want out of life.

Apr 21, 2020

This week on the show we have Patrick Cawley, an attorney at Keystone Elder Law PC, in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania where he prepares estate plans and helps navigate government programs to pay for long-term care, Medicaid, Medicare, and Veterans Administration benefits. He also works with care facilities, funeral directors, the government, and others to ensure that people get the best care without losing their hard-earned savings.

In today’s episode we’ll discuss working with clientele that aren’t comfortable with technology, educating first and how videos establish trust.

Jim’s Hack:
If you can get your hands on the old Magnetic Marketing, by Dan Kennedy, do it. It's some old school audio and sort of cheesy, but there's so many great marketing nuggets in there.

Tyson’s Tip:
Keep marketing, now, more than ever. You have an opportunity where everyone is in front of their screens all day, every single day. I don't care if you're doing paid advertising like pay‑per‑click, or Facebook ads, or if you're just doing free social media, freakin’ do it every single day. It's a very, very, very rare opportunity right now so take advantage of it. I can tell you, from experience, pay‑per‑click - the cost is way down and our numbers are way up. What would normally cost us thousands of dollars, we're paying for hundreds of dollars.

Patrick’s Pointer:
Stay grounded in this time of uncertainty by one simple daily discipline. That's just taking an inventory of your day before you go to sleep. So, simple questions like, “Did I feel any selfishness? Was I dishonest? Was I afraid? Do I need to take responsibility for something or make an apology?” I just think that asking these simple questions about your interactions or how you functioned during the day, when it becomes ingrained in you, you start catching yourself and you catch bad thoughts or bad habits before they take root and become a pattern.

Apr 16, 2020

This week on the show we have Elise Buie, owner of Elise Buie Famliy Law in Seattle, Washington. After undergoing her own divorce and multiple relocations due to Hurricane Katrina, she truly understood what it meant to put the “best interest of the kids” ahead of her own, which led her decision to focus her practice on family law and serving as a Guardian ad Litem advocating for children's best interest in high-conflict divorce and dependency matters. Elise rightfully prides herself on her ability to work through huge problems and major life transitions, as you’ll hear about in today’s episode.

Jim’s Hack:
Stick to your routine and connect with the people who give you guidance. This is not the time to pull back or isolate. Be in connection to help keep your mind right.

Tyson’s Tip:
Pick one project off the list of things you want to do for your practice, and over the next week work on that one thing.

Elise’s Tip:
Lighten up on outward expectations and stay connected to your partner.

If you enjoyed the show, we’d appreciate a 5-Star review!

This week on the show we have Joey Vitale, a trademark attorney (also known as a "brand legitimizer") for online entrepreneurs, emerging thought leaders, and course creators. With his law firm and his courses, Joey helps online business owners call legal dibs on their brand name and signature methods so they never have to worry about losing their brand overnight. Joey has helped thousands of entrepreneurs and has spoken all over the country to help business owners stay safe and thriving.

In today’s episode we’ll talk about building your team, online courses, and making a bigger impact.

Jim’s Hack:
Jim is looking into what part of immigration law can he make a course out of, the one thing he can use to get started. Jim encourages you to think about this for your own practice.

Joey’s Tip:
Consciously surrounding yourself with positive people, especially during this time.

If you enjoyed the show, we’d appreciate a 5-Star review!

Apr 9, 2020

This week on the show we have John Cannon. John is the owner and founder of Cannon & Associates in Oklahoma City. A Firm dedicated to Fierce Advocacy for Families and Freedom. John is a former prosecutor, Public Defender, and Assistant Attorney General. The firm focuses on criminal defense, personal injury, and family law. In addition to his practice, John serves as a Judge Advocate in the Oklahoma National Guard; currently assigned to the 45th Infantry Brigade.

In today’s episode we’ll talk about block scheduling, learning for growth, and developing written policies and procedures.

Jim’s Hack:
Brene Brown has a new podcast that launched about a week ago. The first episode was terrific. It's called Unlocking Us. I highly recommend it.

Tyson’s Tip:
It's important to celebrate our wins. As soon as you listen to this, I want you to think about the last 24 hours, list three of your wins and write them down. It'll really help change your mindset. I think we're trained, we’re not supposed to celebrate our wins for some reason. Celebrate your wins. It'll make you feel better. It'll help improve your day. It really will.

John’s Tip:
With things slowing down, block in time for your calendar. Block in an hour. Block in four hours. Trust me. I initially had to go a month and a half out to block time. Now, I don't have anything on Wednesday afternoon, and I don't have anything all day Friday. That allows me to put in that white space - family, and golf, and business development. I think you'll all be, as I've been amazed, that you can still practice and still serve all your clients while you block out time to handle the business side of your practices.

The doors to the Maximum Lawyer Guild are now open!

Apr 7, 2020

This week on the show we have Charlotte Christian, who operates an Alabama Divorce Law Firm and is working to expand her virtual model throughout the State of Alabama.

In today’s episode we’ll talk about changing practice areas, working remotely, and scaling.

Jim’s Hack:
In this time of great uncertainty and anxiety, we need to be as transparent as we can, especially with our employees about the realities of the situation. We shouldn’t sugarcoat things. I also don’t think we should be alarmist, but I think we have to be realistic and we have to be honest. We have to be as honest and vulnerable and as transparent as we can be.

Tyson’s Tip:
Save time with the Reach app. You can create groups of people. Let’s say you have a bunch of lawyer friends, say criminal defense lawyers, and you need somebody to cover a court appearance, you can send a text to all of those people. Let’s say you’re a personal injury lawyer and you’ve got a question about underinsured motorist coverage or something like that, you can send it to all of those people at one point. It’s not a group text. It is an individual text to all of the different people in that group.

Charlotte’s Tip:
If you have an iPhone 10 or 11, you can get Verizon to add an additional line to your phone. It’s not a voice line. It’s not an internet line. It’s an actual cellular line. This way you have a personal line and a business line. Whenever you start to make a call, it lets you choose which line you’re going to use to make the call.

This week on the show we have attorney Brian Manning. Brian owns Manning Asylum Law in Houston, TX.

He worked as a government Asylum Officer for the government's two main agencies for refugee and asylum matters for 11 years and uses his insights from this experience to help his clients present the strongest possible case for asylum and other immigration benefits.

In today’s episode we’ll talk about what it’s really like to start your own practice, setting goals from the start, and turning experience into expertise!

Jim’s Hack:
With more people working from home right now, create a routine for yourself that sets clear lines between work and personal time.

Tyson’s Tip:
When working at home Tyson leaves out his front door as if he were leaving to his work office, and comes in the back door to work in his home office (his kids think he’s gone).

Brian’s Tip:
Brian recommends the software at remove.vg to remove backgrounds from photos, it’s free and the best tool he’s found for this!

Her practice is focused on residential real estate transactions. She can be reached by email at cheryl@cherylmorrisonlaw.com or on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/attorneycherylmorrison/.

In today’s episode we’ll talk about going out on your own, work-life balance, slow growth and competition.

Jim’s Hack:
Bring together the people you work with to discuss software you use and talk through how each person uses it and how they want to use it, you'll learn easier and better ways to use the software.

Tyson’s Tip:
For anyone who has an iPhone, use Airdrop. Airdrop allows you to wirelessly send documents, photos, videos, websites, map locations, and more to a nearby Mac, iPhone, or iPads.

Cheryl’s Tip:
Do some videos! Cheryl is a part of the video challenge in the Facebook group!
