In today’s episode, we join Erin Levine, a family law specialist located in Oakland CA. With Hello Divorce, she guides users through divorce with DIY and DIFY options as well as access to fixed-fee, on-demand lawyers through her firm Levine Family Law Group.

We’ll discuss how Levine is using technology and a more efficient “DIY” model to not only save her time, dealing with regulation while running a legal tech company and law firm simultaneously, and improving your twitter reach.

Hacking’s Hack:

We’ve been working with Anneke Godlewski to make a physical newsletter and our firm and its been absolutely painless. You can reach out to her in the Maximum Lawyer FB group or at https://themarketink.com/

Tyson’s Tip:

Renegotiate your bills and fees with your vendors. I saved $1500 for the year just this morning.

Erin’s Expertise:

If you have any financial information that you need to get to an outride vendor or family member, use https://onetimesecret.com/ which allows you to temporarily share password information.

In today’s episode we join Robert Von Dohlen, a divorce lawyer for professionals based out of Houston Texas.

We’ll discuss joining the legal field from an unconventional background, the challenges of communicating with clients in difficult life situations, marketing to upmarket clients, how FirmFlex has helped his social media strategy, and how to handle the intake process in a smaller-sized practice.

Hacking’s Hack:

Check out the Google Chrome Extension “Facebook Timeline Eradicator”-it replaces your news feed with an inspirational quote so that you can check your notifications without getting sucked into the news feed scroll.

Tyson’s Tip:

We threw a costume contest on Facebook and had a ton of interaction and feedback. Try to throw relative

Robert’s Recommendation:

Shoot some video this week. Take your phone and shoot a 60-second video on the problem that you solved that day.

In today’s episode we’re looking at Maximum Lawyer and our firm’s years in review, saying goodbyes, and breaking down the prospective client’s decision process.

Hacking’s Hack:

Look at your entire process from the client’s perspective and smooth out any pain points.

Tyson’s Tip:

Rethink how you are buying your vehicles-break down the cost of owning the vehicle on a yearly basis, and figure out how you can write-off work related vehicles.

This week on the show we have Russ Nesevich, owner of Nesevich Law, an Estate Planning and Elder Law firm based out of New Jersey.

In today’s episode we’ll talk about leaving private equity to start a law firm, building a business and not a job, maintaining work-life balance, and the best time in your life to start a firm.

https://nesevichlaw.com/

Hacking’s Hack:

Take a walk to network and brainstorm instead of going out for food.

Tyson’s Tip:

In the spirit of kindness week, go tell someone how much you appreciate them-and mean it.

Russ’s Tip:

Ask. There are tons of resources and people willing to help in the group if you are willing to ask.

This week on the show we Marco Brown, owner of Brown Law, a divorce law firm based in Salt Lake City.

In today’s episode we’ll discuss some of the biggest mistakes young lawyers are making when they start out, flat rate vs billable hours, and how Marco stays motivated and driven leading his practice.

Hacking’s Hack:

You guys know I love audiobooks. Check out Atomic Habits by James Clear, focuses on the small habits that make all the difference.

Tyson’s Tip:

Send out your holiday cards soon. Especially if you’re sending thanksgiving cards, you should be getting them this week.

Marco’s Tip:

Fire your worst client this week. Get rid of that person, you will make more money.

Happy Halloween!

This week on the show we’ll discuss the 10 scariest mistakes we see lawyers make:

  1. Not delegating things you don’t need to be doing
  2. The amount that solo and small firms are making
  3. Not doing video marketing
  4. Not systemizing your firm's processes
  5. Not prioritizing intake
  6. Not using automation
  7. Negative self-talk
  8. Not taking law practice management courses
  9. Being afraid to take action
  10. Overspending

Hacking’s Hack:

Lawyers should keep a spreadsheet of when all of their software renewals are so that you don’t keep getting billed for software you are not using.

Tyson’s Tip:

Go build one Zapier Zap. It’s the gateway software into automizing your firm.

This week on the show we have Devon Rood Slovensky, owner of Slovensky Law PLLC, a Family Law practice in Roanoke VA. In today’s episode we’ll discuss quality control when it comes to hiring a company to handle your calls, outsourcing your mail, challenges of being a female firm owner, and when to call good enough.

Hacking’s Hack:

Read the book “In Praise of Slowness” by Carl Honore

https://www.amazon.com/Praise-Slowness-Challenging-Cult-Speed/dp/0060750510

Tyson’s Tip:

Hire out for things that you know you won’t do. Contract it out.

Jess’s Tip:

Take time to engage with your clients, it makes a huge difference with client relationships and case anxiety.

This week on the show we have Jess Birken, owner of Birken Law Offices where she helps charities and non-profits to solve their problems so they can focus on what’s important. In this episode we’ll discuss spotting problem prospective clients, being a good friend, how to stay motivated about your work, and the best software to be using as a solo.

Twitter @JessBirken

www.hackyourpractice.lawyer

https://birkenlaw.com/

Hacking’s Hack:

I’m really excited about this week’s hack, it comes from a lawyer in my office named Ashley Moore. If you go to printfriendly.com you can enter the URL and it will print just the text, no ads or anything else cluttering the printed paper.

Tyson’s Tip:

I just finished listening to the podcast Land of the Giants. The first season goes in-depth with how Amazon started out and how they grew to the size they are today.

Jess’s Tip:

In Zapier, I recently learned that you can filter information from data that you have. So you can pull just an email, or just a phone number from your data. The conditional formatting is pretty amazing and will let you do just about anything you want.

This week on the show we have Adam Krause, partner at Krause and Kinsman law firm, a personal injury and mass torts firm based in Kansas City MO and Raleigh NC. In today’s episode we’ll talk about starting a firm straight out of law school, building a referral network from scratch, incorporating virtual employees with a physical office, and whether or not you need to change your case management software.

https://krauseandkinsman.com/

Hacking’s Hack:

Zapier. It’s super easy to get started and you can get incredibly complex if you want to. It’s the backbone of our entire intake and case management system. It’s not nearly as intimidating as you might think. It’s a productive rabbit hole.

Tyson’s Tip:

Huji Cam. It’s an app that simulates taking pictures on an old Fujifilm camera. Great for taking less boring pictures to post on social media and to share with friends.

Adam’s Advice:

-Use MyFitnessPal. Its been great for me, especially while I’m traveling.

-Upwork. I’m able to build a dream team from freelancers and I don’t have to worry about getting someone under qualified.

This week on the show we have Annabel Eyrick, Jim’s Personal trainer and owner of Total Fitness Solutions in St. Louis MO. We’ll talk about how lawyers especially can do better about being healthy on the go, cardio vs resistance exercises, healthy dieting (while still enjoying yourself), and keeping motivated to live a healthy life with so many other things competing for your time.

Hacking’s Hack:

Braintoss, made by the Get Things Done crew with David Allen. You can either record a voice memo, a video, or a note and email it to yourself.

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/braintoss/id576226036

Tyson’s Tip:

Get the app Roadtrippers, it’ll show you how much gas it costs to drive to various locations on road trips, how much those things cost when you get there, and all kinds of other convenient features to keep your road trip smooth and in-budget.

This week on the show Jim and Tyson catch up on where their firms are at and where they’re headed. We’ll discuss virtual vs physical office space, handing off cases to lawyers you hire, prioritizing new clients or repeat clients, and focusing on the “after” unit of the sales process.

Hacking’s Hack:

Meet as a team and break down the most important ideas on your to-do list. If everything is important nothing is, you have to sit down and delegate as a team or nothing will happen.

Tyson’s Tip:

Otter. It is a really incredible voice-to-text transcription app. It didn’t mess up a single word when we tested it.

This week on the show we have David Frees, partner at estate planning firm Unruh, Turner, Burke and Frees located in Southeastern PA. In this episode we’ll discuss being intentional with your marketing, getting testimonials that answer your prospective clients objections, and being intentional with how you market so that you can choose exactly what types of cases come to you, not the other way around.

https://www.paestateplanners.com/

dfrees@utbf.com

lsnyder@utbf.com

Dave’s Direction:

Have an editorial calendar and write your own content. Set aside time right now.

Have your intake team keep track of which content produces which types of clients. Cater your content to the types of clients you like working with most.

Hacking’s Challenge:

Start tracking your firm’s data because you never know how or when you can use it. They will give you indicators for what you need to work on and what you can do even better.

Tyson’s Tip:

SmoresUp App, it allows you to coordinate your calendar with your significant other, assign chores to your kids, and other cool features along those lines. Its even free!

This week on the show we have Gina Horkey, founder of Horkey HandBook, a website geared towards helping others find or become a kickass virtual assistant. In this episode we’ll discuss everything Virtual Assistant related: Hiring, Training, Managing, and more. We’ll also touch on the current state of entrepreneurship and the future of the Freelance Economy.

https://horkeyhandbook.com/

Gina’s Guidance: I recommend one of my favorite books called Anything You Want by Derek Sivers.

https://www.amazon.com/Anything-You-Want-Lessons-Entrepreneur/dp/B0058LXVH0/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=anything+you+want+derek+sivers&qid=1568251598&s=books&sr=1-1

Hacking’s Challenge: If any member of our group and takes a video and posts it for their firm 7 days in a row, I will send them a surprise at the end of the 7 days.

Tyson’s Tip: Brendan Burchard book called High Performance Habits. He’s studied a ton of very successful people and really breaks down the habits that make them that way.

“Automating Your Firm” w/Kelsey Bratcher

This week on the show we have Kelsey Bratcher, owner of Hired Gun Solutions and automation/integration expert second to none. In this episode we’ll discuss the tools you can use to begin automating your firm and compare CRM and Automation technology.

https://www.hiredgunsolutions.com/about/

Hacking’s Hack:

I’ve been really enjoying this podcast called “Momentum” from Alex Charfen. Its about empowering both the entrepreneur and the implementors.

https://www.charfen.com/podcast/

Tyson’s Tip:

Sometimes its ok to hit the reset button and start everything over. It’s better to reset now than later on when you’re deeper into bad habits.

Kelsey’s Tip:

Look at Zapier and Google Docs. Law firm are document oriented and this is where you are going to save the most time and money.

Starting out? Get Pipedrive, Autopilot, and Zapier.

This week on the show we have Bobby Buchanan, one of the group’s most active members and owner of Joint Custody Advocates.

In this episode we’ll talk about managing the stress of starting a firm with law school debt and a family, the difference between the entrepreneurial and employee mindset, training your first associates, and more.

https://jointcustodyadvocates.com/our-team/

Hacking’s Hack:

The client has the best opinion of us the day they hire us, and that’s because we tend to slack on the “after” unit of the marketing process. Take some time to make sure your current clients are having the best experience possible.

Tyson’s Tip:

We’ve built in two surveys to our clients, we give a survey during their case and after their case. You can ask for a review early on if you ask for a survey.

Bobby’s Tip:

That thing you’ve been considering for the last six months? Do it. I believe in you.

This week on the show we have Mike Allbee (AKA Big Mike), one of the group’s oldest members and owner of Allbee Law Firm, a North Texas injury firm.

In this episode we’ll talk about starting a law firm with $50, prioritizing quality of cases over quantity, and having the faith to gamble on yourself or a new hire.

https://www.callbigmike.com/

Hacking’s Hack:

Rocket Fuel-A book on how to get the visionary and the implementer together. It’s exactly what our firm needed. It’s a pretty short book so you can knock it out fast.

Tyson’s Tip:

Give 7 compliments to 7 people over the next 7 days. It means a lot more to people than you might think.

Mike’s Tip:

There’s a website called Google flights that lets you search by geographical areas and see where places are cheapest. Every time I travel it is a bargain.

This week on the show we have Melissa Shanahan, founder of Velocity Work, a law firm consulting and coaching company.

In this episode we’ll discuss how Melissa started in the consulting industry, which KPI’s are important and how to track them, how she keeps her law firm clients accountable on goals, and how she keeps level-headed when working with such a diverse client pool.

https://velocitywork.com/

Hacking’s Hack:

From Ashley: Don’t let the muggles get you down

Me: Read the book 5AM Club, its amazing. My wife doesn’t like getting up that early so she’s starting a 5-minutes early club so she never feels like she’s running late by arriving 5 minutes early to everything.

Tyson’s Tip:

If you’re like me you’ve got post-it notes everywhere. Post-it has a new app that lets you write post-it notes on your phone that follow you around at all times. It’s a convenient and fun way to keep track of all the little notes we leave for ourselves.

Melissa’s Tip:

My tip of the week is to reduce your inputs. Be intentional about the media you let influence you.

This week on the episode we have Brian Mittman, a worker’s comp lawyer based out of New York. In this episode we’ll cover naming your firm, shifting your mindset from learning to implementation, KPI’s and measuring firm health with metrics, and avoiding “growing broke” while scaling.

Hacking’s Hack:

In the old days, generating attorney-client agreements would take a day or two. We have now automated the process so that we can generate agreements while prospective clients are still in the office for their consult. Do whatever you can to make this process as quick as possible.

Tyson’s Tip:

Udemy. Its super cheap and has courses on everything, including PPC and management.

Brian’s Tip:

We switched over to a program that ties into QuickBooks called Bill.com. It has allowed us to not have to send checks which has been a huge help.

Another quick hack is to use HIIT to stay in shape. Don’t neglect your health.

In this episode Jim and Tyson discuss the struggle of being a solo or small firm lawyer and dealing with the obstacles that come with the profession.

Hacking’s Hack:

I’ve really taken to this 20 minutes of inspiring content a day goal. You’re a sum of the people and content entering your brain. Choose positive and inspiring content to infuse in your brain.

Tyson’s Tip:

I’m considering a switch from Infusionsoft to Autopilot HQ. I’ve stumbled upon something called Jackfruit, you can create a Slack channel where a video is always running. It’s basically a video conference room for Slack.

Hacking’s Hack:

Dale Carnegie-How to Stop Worrying and Start Learning

Tyson’s Tip:

Recently I’ve been thinking about how I can work out more. Make it easier for you to work out. Make it more accessible by putting an exercise bike in your office, keeping a change of clothes in the office, or keeping baby wipes around.

John’s Tip:

Strategic Coach and Dan Sullivan have totally changed our lives and businesses. Talk to anyone in the group and you’ll understand why it is worth every penny of what they charge.

Seth’s Tip:

Take a moment and look at your internal processes and procedures. Make sure that it is retrievable and useable to have those available.

“Scaling from 0 to 200 Employees” w/Robert Hoglund

Today on the show we have Robert Hoglund, a graduate of Hamline University School of Law, owner of Hoglund, Chwialkowski & Mrozik, PLLC, a Social Security Disability Law Firm.

In today’s episode we’ll discuss the ethics of marketing and expanding your firm into new areas, phone consultations vs. in-person consultations, and splitting time between the firm and other businesses.

Hacking’s Hack:

Read 5AM Club- I’ve been getting up at 5 and its made a big change on my productivity and outlook.

Tyson’s Tip:

Transferwise. Transferwise lets you easily pay virtual assistants when you’re not going through Upwork or a similar platform.

Robert’s Tip:

Hold your attorneys accountable with data and coach them on their weak areas.

Keep your phone consults to 8-10 minutes-give them a reason to schedule an appointment.

Confirm appointments 1-3 business days from the call.

Hacking’s Hack:

Buy Dan Kennedy’s new book “Marketing to the Affluent”. The introduction alone is worth the investment.

Tyson’s Tip:

It’s summertime, we’re in the middle of June, things start to slow down, take a little time and sharpen the saw. Use this time to refine yourself and your craft.

Pete’s Tip:

If you don’t figure out a way to have your clients tell you about their business without charging them you never get the chance to find out how to help them see the forest from the trees.

Today on the show we have Jim Hart, owner of the Hart Law Firm, a divorce practice based in North Carolina. In this episode we’ll discuss hiring “empty-bucket” vs. “full-bucket” employees, Jim’s experience with Atticus coaching, and struggling with delegating and growing.

https://jameshartlaw.com/

Hacking’s Hack:

I’m reading a book called “Scaling Up”, talking about growth he said that once you reach 5-6 employees you have to start delegating things you are not good at, but once you reach 10-15 you have to start delegating things you are good at. The thing that the entrepreneur is the best at becomes the weakness because the entrepreneur doesn’t want to let go.

Tyson’s Tip:

Take a 4-week vacation, disconnect from the business, and enjoy the vacation. It forces you to get your systems in place so that you can take this kind of vacation.

Jim’s Tip:

We all have CRM’s we use, something that I’ve done is I use Less Annoying CRM just for managing referral relationships, separate from the CRM I use for my potential clients.
