This week on the show we have Josh Satterlee, a Doctor of Chiropractic, who we recently met at our Zapathon.

In today’s episode we’ll talk about standardizing systems, thinking outside the box into other industries, and having a growth mindset.

Hacking’s Hack:
Jim tells us about receiving a one-star review on Google. He shared the review on his firm’s Facebook page and in the Maximum Lawyer Facebook group and requested that anyone who has had a good experience to leave a positive review and was able to increase his five star reviews by 33 new reviews!

Tyson’s Tip:
Tyson is re-reading the book Scaling Up by Verne Harnish which he previously recommended. We often read these books and want to implement all of these new things with our team, but if you’ve got something you want people to adopt consider having them read it too so they can understand where it’s coming from and the context around it.

Josh’s Tip:
Josh’s tip for travel is to get a paper planner. Our phone calendars are good at reminders and keeping details but not good at time planning.  Layout your schedule in the planner to get a better sense of time and travel that an app calendar doesn’t give you.  Josh also recommends the TripIt: Travel Planner app to help with this!

This week we’re sharing an incredible speaking engagement from Seth Price and Nalini Prasad about Search Engine Optimization at MaxLawCon18.

Seth Price is an accomplished attorney and transformational thought leader who scaled a 2-person law firm to 38 lawyers in less than a decade. Seth Price founded BluShark Digital LLC, a digital marketing company, using the same cutting-edge marketing techniques (high-quality technical optimization, sophisticated content, authoritative link-building, and local optimization) that Seth used to grow his own business and has established itself as a best in class digital agency focusing on the legal sector.

Nalini Prasad works alongside Seth Price helping small law firms build their business and stand out online. Nalini frequently speaks to legal audiences across the country on the intersection of utilizing best practices of trending SEO techniques and generating quality leads online. Nalini also shares tips on creative ways to leverage traditional offline marketing efforts to increase a firm's online presence.

Tyson’s Tip:

Tyson recommends the book The China Study, it’s an eye opening book about diets that has him making some adjustments to his own!

This week on the show we have Neal Goldstein. Neal has had extensive experience in the area of Personal Injury law. At Goldstein and Bashner he managed the firm's caseload and has been involved in the resolution of millions of dollars for his clients. Over the last twenty years Neal has expanded the firm's clientele so that the firm now represents injured parties all over New York and is co-counsel in numerous claims in other states.

In today’s episode we’ll talk about Neal’s story which has formed his “why” and how he hopes to transition into doing only the things he’s the most passionate about including marketing.

Take a listen at 21:14 to hear Neal talk about a brand video he created!

Jim’s Hack:Now that our Facebook group has grown, we actually have people in most major markets around the country and my hack of the week is to connect with those people. I’ve been lucky enough to have some of the best meals with our members. It's so easy to get caught up in the digital, but Neal's right, there's no substitute for human connection.

Neal’s Tip:
Because my memory is starting to go on me and because I have ideas that pop into my head at the worst times, I use an app called Otter, Otter voice digital. And it is a great way of speaking your mind very quickly. It actually records everything that you say in text format. It's searchable. And if you're doing an interview, or a podcast, it actually separates the voices so it works out very well.

Tyson’s Tip:
So my tip of the week is a book that my mom gave me. And it's called The Coffee Bean. It's a really simple lesson and an easy read. I mean, you could probably read it in 30 minutes. In a nutshell, you look at a coffee bean and really all the power is inside the coffee bean. And you don't really get that power out until you boil it down. It’s a really neat lesson.

This week on the show we have Jim Aspell. Jim is the principal and managing attorney of the firm which he started in 2006 following 20 years of litigation practice in a mid-size firm in Hartford, Connecticut.

Jim focuses his practice in the areas of worker's compensation and personal injury litigation, insurance subrogation law, social security disability law, personal bankruptcy, and residential real estate.

In today’s episode we’ll talk about starting from scratch, his decision to niche down, and his current transition.

Hacking’s Hack:

Jim recommends the book Built to Sell, it's about how to set up your

company to be saleable when the time comes for you to get out of the firm.

Jim’s Tip:

Get an accountant right off the bat. I would urge anybody, considering doing that, to get a good accountant that's actually familiar with small business. They can guide you on the type of entity choice to pick S Corp, LLC, and can put you on the right path in terms of payroll so you don't run afoul of payroll taxes and those kind of things.

This week on the show we take a walk with Jim and Tyson and discuss the ways your mindset might be holding you back and the ways changing it could propel you to forward.

Hacking’s Hack:

Jim recommends the book Can’t Hurt Me by David Goggins. For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare - poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights. But through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a U.S. Armed Forces icon and one of the world's top endurance athletes.

Tyson’s Tip:

Record a video and publish it – no editing - and watch the positive comments roll in!

Morris represents accident and injury victims, hosts The Mo Show Live, a Facebook Live event that features interviews with prominent community members of Huntsville and Alabama, and is also a co-author of The Ultimate Guide to Social Media For Business Owner, Professionals and Entrepreneurs book.

Hacking’s Hack:

Jim said there’s no place better to start when it comes to podcasting than Pat Flynn. Pat Flynn started Smart Passive Income many years ago.

Tyson’s Tip:

In regards to starting a podcast, Tyson recommend putting three in the can and then publishing it. The reason why is, once a person listens to it and want to listen to more, they're going to want to listen to more right away and you want to hook them.

Mo’s Tip:

Make sure you respond to your Google reviews, all the positive reviews should have a response. It’s really important to show that engagement with your audience that may be looking on Google.

Tyson’s Tip:
Tyson recommended another book from John Jantsch, The Self-Reliant Entrepreneur: 366 Daily Meditations to Feed Your Soul and Grow Your Business.

In today’s episode, we’ll talk about scaling your firm, running multiple offices remotely, and how Chelsie went from six figures to seven figures in just three years.

https://chelsielamie.com/

Hacking’s Hack:

Jim encouraged lawyers to start podcasting because of all of the amazing benefits. It's easier than you think.

Tyson’s Tip:

Tyson recommended the app Google Family Link so you can monitor the screen activity of your children.

Chelsie’s Tip:

Chelsie recommended the book, Profit First.

Dec 18, 2019

This week on the show we have Nick Oritz, owner of Ortiz Law Firm, based out of Pensacola, Florida. Nick represents policyholders in individual disability, group disability, and ERISA long-term disability claims.

In today’s episode we’ll talk about ultimate goals, struggles with managing employees and marketing.

Hacking’s Hack:

Here’s a hack to make more connections. I take a photo of myself with the books that I order and tweet it out with references to the authors Twitter account. When I received Duct Tape Marketing and tweeted it, the author John Jantsch liked it and retweeted it.

Tyson’s Tip:

If you’ve been wanting to learn another language, check out the Duolingo app, it’s free! The app feels more like a game because it gives you points and challenges you. If you like to play games on your phone it might motivate you to learn a new language.

Nick’s Tip:

Don’t give up just because something doesn’t seem to be working. Too many lawyers try something once and say, “Oh, that doesn’t work”. Sometimes it requires refinement and tweaking.

In today’s episode, we’ll talk about transitioning a business model, building a lifestyle firm, and how to use the success of other businesses to grow your firm.

https://www.coloradoestateplanning.net/about-us/

Hacking’s Hack:

Write down your list of excuses, and then burn that piece of paper.  But before you do, on another page write the opposite of your excuses.  These will be your life marching orders for 2020.

Tyson’s Tip:

Save the coupons you receive from vendors, then buy in bulk to save thousands of dollars. Bonus: Download the free Honey Chrome extension to save a ton of money: joinhoney.com/ref/pd5q2ge

As coupons come in from the vendors you use on a regular basis save them and then use them on bulk purchases to save the most money!

Alexis’s Tip:

Do what you feel is right. Don’t conform yourself to what the practice of law says that you should do.

Hacking’s Hack:

We’ve been working with Anneke Godlewski to make a physical newsletter and our firm and its been absolutely painless. You can reach out to her in the Maximum Lawyer FB group or at https://themarketink.com/

Tyson’s Tip:

Renegotiate your bills and fees with your vendors. I saved $1500 for the year just this morning.

We’ll discuss joining the legal field from an unconventional background, the challenges of communicating with clients in difficult life situations, marketing to upmarket clients, how FirmFlex has helped his social media strategy, and how to handle the intake process in a smaller-sized practice.

Hacking’s Hack:

Check out the Google Chrome Extension “Facebook Timeline Eradicator”-it replaces your news feed with an inspirational quote so that you can check your notifications without getting sucked into the news feed scroll.

Tyson’s Tip:

We threw a costume contest on Facebook and had a ton of interaction and feedback. Try to throw relative

Robert’s Recommendation:

Shoot some video this week. Take your phone and shoot a 60-second video on the problem that you solved that day.

In today’s episode we’re looking at Maximum Lawyer and our firm’s years in review, saying goodbyes, and breaking down the prospective client’s decision process.

Hacking’s Hack:

Look at your entire process from the client’s perspective and smooth out any pain points.

Tyson’s Tip:

Rethink how you are buying your vehicles-break down the cost of owning the vehicle on a yearly basis, and figure out how you can write-off work related vehicles.

In today’s episode we’ll talk about leaving private equity to start a law firm, building a business and not a job, maintaining work-life balance, and the best time in your life to start a firm.

https://nesevichlaw.com/

Take a walk to network and brainstorm instead of going out for food.

Tyson’s Tip:

In the spirit of kindness week, go tell someone how much you appreciate them-and mean it.

Hacking’s Hack:

You guys know I love audiobooks. Check out Atomic Habits by James Clear, focuses on the small habits that make all the difference.

Tyson’s Tip:

Send out your holiday cards soon. Especially if you’re sending thanksgiving cards, you should be getting them this week.

Happy Halloween!

This week on the show we’ll discuss the 10 scariest mistakes we see lawyers make:

  1. Not delegating things you don’t need to be doing
  2. The amount that solo and small firms are making
  3. Not doing video marketing
  4. Not systemizing your firm's processes
  5. Not prioritizing intake
  6. Not using automation
  7. Negative self-talk
  8. Not taking law practice management courses
  9. Being afraid to take action
  10. Overspending

Hacking’s Hack:

Lawyers should keep a spreadsheet of when all of their software renewals are so that you don’t keep getting billed for software you are not using.

Tyson’s Tip:

Go build one Zapier Zap. It’s the gateway software into automizing your firm.

Hacking’s Hack:

Read the book “In Praise of Slowness” by Carl Honore

https://www.amazon.com/Praise-Slowness-Challenging-Cult-Speed/dp/0060750510

Tyson’s Tip:

Hire out for things that you know you won’t do. Contract it out.

Jess’s Tip:

Take time to engage with your clients, it makes a huge difference with client relationships and case anxiety.

This week on the show we have Jess Birken, owner of Birken Law Offices where she helps charities and non-profits to solve their problems so they can focus on what’s important. In this episode we’ll discuss spotting problem prospective clients, being a good friend, how to stay motivated about your work, and the best software to be using as a solo.

Hacking’s Hack:

I’m really excited about this week’s hack, it comes from a lawyer in my office named Ashley Moore. If you go to printfriendly.com you can enter the URL and it will print just the text, no ads or anything else cluttering the printed paper.

Tyson’s Tip:

I just finished listening to the podcast Land of the Giants. The first season goes in-depth with how Amazon started out and how they grew to the size they are today.

Jess’s Tip:

In Zapier, I recently learned that you can filter information from data that you have. So you can pull just an email, or just a phone number from your data. The conditional formatting is pretty amazing and will let you do just about anything you want.

This week on the show we have Adam Krause, partner at Krause and Kinsman law firm, a personal injury and mass torts firm based in Kansas City MO and Raleigh NC. In today’s episode we’ll talk about starting a firm straight out of law school, building a referral network from scratch, incorporating virtual employees with a physical office, and whether or not you need to change your case management software.

Hacking’s Hack:

Zapier. It’s super easy to get started and you can get incredibly complex if you want to. It’s the backbone of our entire intake and case management system. It’s not nearly as intimidating as you might think. It’s a productive rabbit hole.

Tyson’s Tip:

Huji Cam. It’s an app that simulates taking pictures on an old Fujifilm camera. Great for taking less boring pictures to post on social media and to share with friends.

Adam’s Advice:

-Use MyFitnessPal. Its been great for me, especially while I’m traveling.

-Upwork. I’m able to build a dream team from freelancers and I don’t have to worry about getting someone under qualified.

This week on the show we have Annabel Eyrick, Jim’s Personal trainer and owner of Total Fitness Solutions in St. Louis MO. We’ll talk about how lawyers especially can do better about being healthy on the go, cardio vs resistance exercises, healthy dieting (while still enjoying yourself), and keeping motivated to live a healthy life with so many other things competing for your time.

Hacking’s Hack:

Braintoss, made by the Get Things Done crew with David Allen. You can either record a voice memo, a video, or a note and email it to yourself.

Tyson’s Tip:

Get the app Roadtrippers, it’ll show you how much gas it costs to drive to various locations on road trips, how much those things cost when you get there, and all kinds of other convenient features to keep your road trip smooth and in-budget.

This week on the show Jim and Tyson catch up on where their firms are at and where they’re headed. We’ll discuss virtual vs physical office space, handing off cases to lawyers you hire, prioritizing new clients or repeat clients, and focusing on the “after” unit of the sales process.

Hacking’s Hack:

Meet as a team and break down the most important ideas on your to-do list. If everything is important nothing is, you have to sit down and delegate as a team or nothing will happen.

Tyson’s Tip:

Otter. It is a really incredible voice-to-text transcription app. It didn’t mess up a single word when we tested it.
